Odessa, TX – After jumping out to a quick 4-0 first inning lead, Odessa High put a halt to the game by adding six runs in the fifth to defeat Permian 13-2 in the District 2-6A match-up at the Ratliff Softball Complex on Tuesday.
Pitcher Jenna Spencer went the distance for the Bronchos, striking out four and walking two while limiting Mojo to four hits all evening. Madilyn Martinez started in the circle for Permian, but Alexis Belen took over to get PHS out of the inning. Belen struck out six, walked two, and gave up seven hits – including a homerun in the fifth.
The Panthers batted first and started the game with a lead-off walk. The next two batters were unable to get on base before OHS caught Tiggy Rayos trying to steal home. Spencer led off for OHS with a base hit to centerfield. After a Mojo fielding error cost a run, Meghan Gattis sent a shot over the left field fence to plate two more. A solo homer by Joley Cruz gave the Bronchos a 4-0 lead after just one complete inning.
Permian stranded two runners in the top of the second, while Odessa High left one on base for a scoreless second frame. Emma Chavez hammered a shot over the centerfield fence to open the third stanza for Mojo’s first run to narrow the deficit to 4-1. The Panthers made it a 4-2 ballgame in the top of the fourth inning on a Madison Garcia homerun.
The Bronchos utilized an RBI base hit by Spencer and a pair of fielding errors to push three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth frame for a 7-2 advantage. After Permian batters were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning, OHS went on the offensive.
Odessa High answered in the bottom half of the inning with a six-run blast. Two doubles and an error extended the OHS lead to 10-2 but the Bronchos weren’t finished. Shelby Navarrete went yard with a three-run homerun to end the contest early by mercy rule.
Odessa High improves to 2-1 and 13-5 overall. Permian falls to 0-3 in district play and 7-4 for the season.
