Odessa, TX – In their final home game of the 2021 season, the Permian Lady Panthers picked up a 14-9 victory over the San Angelo Central Lady Cats on Friday at the Ratliff Softball Complex.
After suffering a 6-5 road loss to Central on March 23, Permian returned the favor in front of its home crowd. Three Lady Black Cats finished the evening going three-for-four at the plate. Taylor Ramirez, Emma Chavez, and Nyssa Dunn provided plenty of offensive strength. Dunn hammered out two homeruns, while Chavez also went yard and Ramirez donated a triple. Alexis Belen homered with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth that reached the entry roads to the stadium. Chavez and Belen split time in the circle for Permian, with Chavez being credited with the win.
For the Lady Cats, starter Alli Talamantes absorbed the loss after giving up six hits and seven runs in two innings. Baylee Fulps went the rest of the way, allowing nine hits and another seven runs. Layne Crooks was three-for-five in her plate appearances with five RBI’s. Taylor Martin went two-for-three with an RBI. Both sent shots over the fence.
San Angelo opened the contest with the game’s first run off of an RBI double by Crooks. Permian responded with four. After lead-off batter Tiggy Rayos got aboard, Ramirez knotted the game on a three-bagger to right field. Chavez followed with a two-run homer to deep centerfield to give the Lady Panthers a lead they would never relinquish. Arianna Ybarra followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 4-1 after one complete inning.
The Black Cats extended the margin in the second frame, adding three more runs off of a pair of base hits and a double by Chavez. Central added a solo homerun to up the tally to 7-2, but Mojo pushed two more runners across the plate for a 9-2 lead after three innings of play.
The Lady Cats exploded with a six-run fourth to narrow the deficit to one run. Central converted five singles and a grand slam homerun by Crooks to make it a 9-8 ball game. The Lady Panthers answered with three runs in the bottom half to give themselves some breathing room. Madison Garcia had led-off with a double and scored on Makayla Sanchez’s RBI base tap. Dunn stepped to the plate and uncorked a bomb to right field for a 12-8 Permian advantage.
San Angelo stranded two in the top of the fifth while Mojo left one on base in the bottom of the inning. Central went down in order in the sixth before Permian added two insurance runs. Back-to-back homeruns by Dunn and Belen gave the Lady Panthers a 14-8 cushion. The Lady Cats took advantage of a couple of fielding errors to plate a run in the top of the seventh, but could not make up any more ground. Mojo took a 14-9 district win to close out Senior Day.
Permian improves the record to 12-10, while Central drops to 12-6. The Lady Panthers are mathematically eliminated from the post-season picture, and the Lady Cats are currently one game short of claiming a playoff spot. San Angelo Central will host Midland Lee next Tuesday and then travel to Abilene High on Friday. The Lady Panthers will close out their season with a road game at Midland Lee on April 23.
