Track: New Sheriff In Town

Abilene, TX – Compass Academy regional qualifiers Donovan Ramirez and Jonathan Jarratt made their mark on the Class 3A Region I Track and Field Meet the past two days at Abilene Christian University. Ramirez has also earned a spot at the State Championships in Austin.

Ramirez took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 46-06.75 to qualify for the state meet. A preliminary round of competition kicked things off on Friday. The morning began with him finishing in seventh in the 110 hurdles. The top eight from the preliminary event would continue on to the finals round today. Ramirez claimed a fourth place finish in the 110 hurdle finals with a time of 15.39. He nabbed another fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 22-07.75.

The junior trackster becomes the first in the school’s history to advance to the UIL state championship meet by winning the triple jump.  Jim Ned’s Caden Martin finished second in triple jump with a 44-10.50 mark to also qualify.

As the other regional qualifying Cougar, Jarratt finished in ninth in the 100 meter with a 11.16 during Friday’s preliminary. The junior sprinter turned in a 22.88 and finished in fifth in the 200 meter later in the day to qualify for the final round. He bettered his time the second running with a 22.71 clock for a fourth place finish. Both runners represented the school and Odessa well. The Compass track team is coached by Aaron Hardwick and Christina Bush.

Top two finishers from each event today will advance to Class 3A Track and Field State Meet that will held on May 6 in Austin.
