Bronchos Ambush Frenship

Odessa, TX – Entering the contest as the lone undefeated team in District 2-6A, Frenship stepped into an ambush as Odessa High walked away with a 63-59 decision in the OHS Fieldhouse on Friday night.

The Bronchos snuffed out a 21-game district win streak by the Tigers and did it in convincing style.  In the first meeting, Frenship enjoyed the confines of its own Tiger Pit and dished out a 77-47 loss to the Bronchos. In the return rematch, Odessa returned the favor in front of a sea of red-and-white dressed fans.

Senior guard Coco Rose led the assault for the Bronchos, topping all scorers with 25 points.  LJ Willis backed him up with another 14.  Odessa High found success knocking down eight perimeter three’s that preserved a lead that held throughout the game.

The Bronchos defensively put the clamps on Frenship’s high-octane offense, which afforded the Wild Bunch to lead most of the game.  Odessa simply outplayed and outsmarted the Tigers with a dose of their own medicine, similar to the first meeting between the two teams in reverse.

OHS’s Jaylen McCowan opened the game with a trey to set the tempo early.  Rose fed Ivan Carreon deep in the lane three times for six of the 18 first quarter points.  Another McCowan perimeter three had the Bronchos enjoying an 18-10 first quarter lead.  The senior guard buried a total of three treys into the cylinder en route to his 12-point effort on the night.

Willis donated a pair of treys in the second stanza, but Frenship returned fire and battled to narrow the deficit to just three points as the contest reached intermission.  TJ Miller made two three’s of his own to spark a 17-point surge by the Tigers for cut the difference to 30-27 at the half.

Rose put the Bronchos back on the offensive in the third period, contributing 10 of 19 Odessa points scored in the quarter.  Frenship’s Tracy Godfrey answered with eight points from four baskets to try to keep pace and keep the Tigers in the ballgame.  It would be short lived as OHS pushed its lead to seven as the battle entered the final frame.

Riding Rose’s hot hand, the Bronchos matched the Tigers shot-for-shot as the clock continued to run.  As Frenship fought desperately to preserve their unbeaten district record, two long-range three’s had the Tigers pulling to within two points with under a minute to play.  Fouls became bonus free-throws as Frenship trailed by one with 30 seconds remaining.  A tough defense and clutch free throws from Willis and Rose would secure the 63-59 decision.

With the victory, Odessa High has secured a playoff spot that will begin at the end of the month.  In other District 2-6A action, the Central Bobcats defeated Midland Legacy 52-46 in San Angelo.  The Abilene High at Midland High game was postponed until Monday due to weather travel concerns.

The Bronchos (7-3) will host winless Midland High (0-9) next Friday in the OHS Fieldhouse. Tip-off for the district tilt is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
