Midland, TX – In a winner-take-all championship game, Midland Northern rode a strong second inning en route to a 10-3 victory over Mid City to claim the 11U District 3 title at Windlands Park on Tuesday night.
Just as the meeting went back-and-forth in the previous game on Monday, Northern got on the board in the opening at-bat. Behind a string of hits to match that effort, the Mid City All-Stars answered in the bottom half of the frame to knot the contest at 1-1 after one inning of play.
It would take an extra inning to decide the 4-3 outcome last night. This time around, the Northern All-Stars were to have no part of it. Will Gray’s base-clearing, three-run RBI triple ushered in a six-run second inning for Northern to extend their lead to 7-1.
Mid City was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, but now found getting runners on base hard to come by. MC now found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-2 deficit heading into the third stanza.
The third inning went by quick with neither team being able to add to the tally.
Each managed to tack a run on the scoreboard in the fourth frame. Northern pushed their advantage to 8-2, but Mid City collected a run in the bottom of the fourth to trail 8-3. It would be the last mark MC added as they were limited to two hits the remainder of the contest.
Northern added two buffer runs in the top of the fifth to secure the District 3 title and 10-3 decision over Mid City. The Northern All-Stars advance to the Texas West Section Tournament that begins on July 2.
