Softball: Bronchos Claim Bragging Rights

Odessa, TX – For the second time this season, Odessa High claimed crosstown bragging rights over Permian to pick up the District 2-6A win at the Ratliff Softball Complex.  Mojo started strong Saturday afternoon, but it was the Lady Bronchos that erupted with a five-run third en route to a 9-3 victory.

Junior Meghan Gattis led the Red Tide, going three-for-three at the plate including a homerun and double.  For Permian, sophomore Tiggy Rayos finished the game also three-for-three and scored a run for the Black Cats.

Odessa High set the tempo early and opened the game loading the bases, but Alexis Belen worked out of the bind for the Lady Panthers. Permian immediately went to work in its first at-bat and collected a pair of runs for a quick 2-0 lead.

Rayos led off with a hard hit shot to centerfield on the first pitch offered by Jenna Spencer. Taylor Ramirez followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Rayos. Emma Chavez blooped a grounder to the infield. An error on the play resulted in Ramirez crossing the plate for the two-run PHS advantage.

In the second frame, Odessa High stranded two runners in its at-bat.  Permian was dealt a short inning as Spencer dished out three consecutive strikeouts.  The Lady Bronchos blew the game open and made their presence known in the third inning. OHS converted six hits into a five-run surge.

Gattis led off with a base tap and Shelby Navarrete belted out a double to follow.  Abegail Molina gave the Bronchos a 3-2 lead when she parked a shot over the left field fence.  Sophomore Nivea Saenz pulled out a two-run homer of her own to up the tally to 5-2.

The Lady Bronchos weren’t finished just yet.  The fourth frame was opened by a Gattis homerun, while Makayla Sanchez donated the lone Permian hit of the inning.  Odessa High utilized four hits to add three more runs to the tally in the top of the fifth. The Lady Panthers would trail 9-2 after another quiet bottom half of the inning.

Belen hammered a two-out bomb over the left field fence in the sixth for the game’s final run. The last at-bat for both teams consisted of six batters and three outs each. The Lady Bronchos earned crosstown bragging rights for the second time this season with a 9-3 victory over Permian.

The Lady Panthers will visit Midland High on April 13, while the Red Tide will host Midland Lee on Tuesday.  Permian hosts San Angelo Central on April 16, and Odessa High travels to Abilene High to round out the week for the Odessa teams.
